My one ruler for reading books

Never been this locked in

I'll be the first one to admit it: My attention span is absolutely ruined. It wasn't really good to begin with. I've always suspected that I suffer from ADHD or some sort of executive function problem or something.

This has manifested in everything I do, from fun to chores, gaming to work and so on. In particular, it has become quite hard for me to read books.

It's still hard, but by total inadvertence, I've found a feature in reading software that has been immensely helpful: The reading ruler

A screenshot of a book displayed in a dark-mode reading app, with one paragraph highlighted by a semi-transparent, green-tinted reading ruler.

As far as I'm aware, reading rulers are intended for people with dyslexia, which I do not suffer from, but nonetheless the intended goal seems to be the same, to help reduce distractions, make it easier to go back to where you were, etc.

Unfortunately, on some apps like Moon+ Reader, it does not seem possible to lock the height of the ruler, leading me to either play with it intentionally, or move it by accident while scrolling through pages.

Apart from this, I've found myself enjoying a very transparent, slightly tinted in my favorite light accent color (particularly like green), about the size of a paragraph (or half a paragraph at larger font sizes) reading ruler the most.

It doesn't fix all of my issues, but still, it's better. Also, it's very satisfying when a paragraph is exactly the size of my ruler. Fun!
